Power cuts spark countrywide protests

LAHORE: Load shedding in different parts of Punjab and Peshawar forced residents on Monday to take to the streets in protest against the “unscheduled” power outages.

Protests in Punjab, including Lahore, Sialkot, Sahiwal, Faisalabad and Shujabad, erupted following the disruption of power from the Mangla Power Plant, a private TV channel reported. In Lahore, all major markets were closed as traders protested the load shedding, which exceeds 12 hours a day in several parts of the city. In response, District Coordination Officer (DCO) Sajjad Bhutta said there would be no load shedding from 4pm to 9pm in the major trade centres of the city.

In Peshawar, residents of the city took to the streets and burned tyres and blocked roads to protest the power breakdowns, which have resulted in almost 20 hours of daily load shedding. NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haidar Hoti, in an official statement, directed the Peshawar Electric Supply Company to observe discipline in load shedding. He also appealed to the public to remain peaceful and refrain from damaging public property. daily times
